Technical Tour: Nidolères Estate


AgriVoltaics2020 will offer a technical tour for participants, which will visit the Nidolères Estate and its agrivoltaic system.

Located in the Pyrénées-Orientales, the Nidolères domain has been a family-owned wine-growing estate for 8 generations with a vineyard spreading over 32 ha. The Escudié family uses sustainable agriculture methods i.e. a reduced use of pesticides. The dynamic agrivoltaic system has been built by Sun'Agri over new vines located on a former 7.5 ha wine paddock which was disused in 1992 and was never replanted due to a lack of satisfactory solution.

FIGURES ON THE AGRIVOLTAIC DEMONSTRATOR OF NIDOLÈRES ESTATE

  • 4.5 ha under photovoltaic panels
  • 3 ha of control zone
  • Year of plantations: 2018
  • 3 grape varieties: Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay and Marselan
  • 17,310 young vine plants under dynamic agrivoltaic equipment
  • a total of 28,600 vine plants (including the control plot).
  • Distance between plants: 1m
  • Distance between rows: 2.25m
  • Plantation density: 4,444 plants/ha
  • Photovoltaic equipment’s height: 4.5 m    


OBJECTIVES OF DYNAMIC AGRIVOLTAICS FOR THE NIDOLERES VINEYARD

  • Boost the vineyard,
  • Produce more acidicy and better balanced white and red wines,
  • Multiply by two the value of wine under agrivoltaic systems thanks to improved quality and a controlled alcohol level
  • Consolidate the estate by restoring profitability and by making it more resilient to climate changes in order to pass it on to the next Escudié generation

THE ASPRES REGION
Wine-growing region enjoying a dedicated Protection Designations of Origin (PDO) since 2017. The region produces excellent wines despite low yield: <40hl/ha. The vineyards are directly threatened due to climate changes and increasingly severe droughts to the point where the decline of farmland is the highest in the region.
