About the Winter School
The 2026 Winter School on AgriVoltaics invites applications from students, researchers, practitioners, entrepreneurs, policymakers, media fellows, and professionals interested in advancing sustainable AgriVoltaics.
The Winter School is being co-organized by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the IARI–NISE Centre of Excellence for Agri-PhotoVoltaics (AgriPV), as part of the Indo-German Cooperation on Agrivoltaics (IGCA). The school is scheduled to be held in the week immediately following the seventh AgriVoltaics World Conference scheduled at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
The five-day immersive program aims to build technical, policy, financial, and implementation capacities for designing and scaling AgriVoltaics. The agenda will have a strong focus on on-ground implementation, with a fair sprinkling of the theory and concepts critical to the design, approach, tools, technologies, business models and policies associated with AgriVoltaics.
AgriVoltaics is rapidly emerging as an innovative solution to simultaneously address food security, renewable energy generation, climate resilience, water sustainability, and rural livelihoods. While interest in AgriVoltaics has grown significantly across the world, there remains a need for stronger technical capacity, policy understanding, financial innovation, and implementation experience, particularly within developing countries.
The 2026 Winter School has been designed to bridge this gap through an interdisciplinary learning platform combining expert lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, field exposure, and networking opportunities. Participants will gain practical insights into planning, designing, implementing, financing, and governing AgriVoltaics systems while learning from successful experiences from across the globe.
In line with the theme of the Seventh AgriVoltaics World Conference, “Powering the Global South”, the school will showcase best practices from pioneering countries in the Global North while highlighting the innovations being tested and developed in the Global South.
Objectives
The Winter School aims to:
- Build technical and institutional capacities for AgriVoltaics.
- Introduce participants to global best practices and experiences in AgriVoltaics.
- Enhance understanding of business models, policy frameworks, ecosystem services, financing mechanisms, and implementation strategies.
- Support the development of future AgriVoltaics projects and partnerships.
- Strengthen the global community of practice around AgriVoltaics by connecting researchers, practitioners, media fellows, policy makers, industry leaders, and civil society actors.

About the Organizers
The 2026 AgriVoltaics Winter School is jointly organized by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the IARI–NISE Centre of Excellence on Agri-PhotoVoltaics (AgriPV) as a part of the Indo-German Cooperation on Agrivoltaics (IGCA), bringing together leading national and international experts to strengthen capacities and accelerate the responsible scaling of agrivoltaics across India and the Global South.
International Water Management Institute (IWMI)
The International Water Management Institute, a CGIAR Research Center, is a global research-for-development organization dedicated to advancing water security, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural development. Through science, innovation, and strategic partnerships, IWMI develops practical solutions that improve water, land, and food systems while supporting resilient livelihoods and sustainable natural resource management. Operating across Asia, Africa, and beyond, IWMI works with governments, research institutions, development partners, and communities to address some of the world's most pressing water and climate challenges.
IARI–NISE Centre of Excellence on Agrivoltaics
To harness the potential of agrivoltaics in India and become a world leader in agrivoltaics, an exclusive Centre of Excellence (COE) on AgriPV, jointly led by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI) and the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), in agreement with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has been established. The COE will focus on optimizing land use, enhancing energy efficiency, increasing agricultural productivity, and promoting sustainable rural development.
Indo-German Cooperation on Agrivoltaics (IGCA)
The Indo-German Cooperation on Agrivoltaics (IGCA) project will accelerate the adoption and scaling of agrivoltaics in India by integrating solar energy generation with sustainable agriculture, optimising land use while strengthening food and energy security. It will demonstrate scalable agrivoltaics models across diverse agro-ecological zones and develop viable business and financing mechanisms for farmers and developers. Through capacity building, knowledge transfer, and gender-inclusive approaches, it will strengthen the capabilities of farmers, developers, and institutions. In partnership with central and state governments, the project aims to support policy integration and create an enabling ecosystem for the long-term mainstreaming of agricoltaics in India. The project is jointly implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH along with Fraunhofer Institut für Solare Energiesysteme (ISE) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).
